Hey everyone, good evening! I've been experimenting with Suno for a couple of weeks on the Free tier and managed to create some pop-rock tracks that turned out genuinely incredible.
I was planning to upload them to Spotify via DistroKid and monetize my YouTube channel... but I read in the Terms of Service that with a Free account, all generated music belongs to Suno.
If I upgrade to the Pro plan ($10/month), can I monetize tracks that were generated WHILE I WAS ON FREE? Or do I strictly have to re-generate them from scratch as a paid subscriber? I really want to avoid copyright strikes or licensing claims months down the road... thanks to anyone who can clarify! 🙏
Hey Alex! Suno's official policy on this is completely explicit (and quite strict):
1. Everything you generate while on the Free tier belongs to Suno for commercial use. You are only permitted to use it for strictly NON-commercial purposes (e.g., personal listening, non-monetized SoundCloud, un-sponsored TikTok, etc.).
2. Upgrading to Pro does NOT retroactively license tracks generated earlier on Free. Those previous songs remain strictly non-commercial.
Practical Solution: Once your Pro plan is active, use the 'Reuse Prompt' and 'Reuse Style' features to re-generate the song from scratch, or upload your old track as an Audio Input to produce a cover/remix under your Pro subscription. That way, the new generation is 100% your commercial property and you can distribute it via DistroKid with complete peace of mind!
Can 100% confirm what Copyright_Lawyer stated! Just adding a small heads-up for YouTube: if you upload the track to YouTube under Pro, make sure NOT to enable DistroKid's automatic Content ID system unless you've significantly tweaked or mastered the track in a DAW.
Because if someone else on Suno generated a similar instrumental backing using identical prompt style tags, you risk accidental cross-claims between Suno creators lol. Aside from that, you're good to go with Pro! 👍
